(Letter from September 29, 2014)
Another week has quickly passed by! Crazy. Hoping all is well at home. I love and miss every one of you.
So this week rocked. Last Monday night we had a "Noche de Hogar" (FHE) with this sweet woman and her daughter (both are named Eliana). They're the best! And they both speak English fairly well so they picked out a Mormon Message IN ENGLISH to share with us! Talk about a treat! This video was so inspired for us at that time; it blows my mind. Check out "You Never Know."
Perhaps I've been out of the country too long or am just not used to hearing English, but I happen to feel this is one of the best videos The Church has ever put out. How beautiful is its message? How universal those feelings! It touched both Hermana Kimball and I so much that we both started to tear up. I love this video because...
1) We don't always see all the fruits of our many labors. Particularly after last week, Hermana Kimball and I (or just I) were feeling a little discouraged with our results. I was studying the difference between Ammon and Abinadi as missionaries. Both were trying to convert evil kings, both were willing to give their lives for the truth, both taught by the spirit and with power, and both were the reason for the conversion of MANY souls. However, Ammon lived to see his fruits while Abinadi was killed without knowing he touched the heart of one who would change the lives of MANY! Both, however, were successful missionaries in the sight of the Lord (see Mosiah 11-18 and Alma 17-20, 23-24).
2) There is no joy in service when you are worried about yourself. In the mission, it is 100% true 100% of the time that you are always happier when you are more concerned with the needs of others than you are with yourself. That's what makes a successful missionary, like Nephi! Helaman 10:4-5 explains that he feared no man, sought not his own life, and that the Lord promised to make him mighty in word, deed, faith, and works. HOLLA!
3) The overall lesson is to give your will over to The Lord. Only He knows our potential to do good. Only when we are acting as Christ would can we truly achieve that goal. President Hinckley asked, "Do you want to be happy? Forget yourself and get lost in this great cause. Lend your efforts to helping people... stand higher, lift those with feeble knees, hold up the hands of those that hang down. Live the gospel of Jesus Christ." I love 3 Nephi 27:21.
I'm trying to be like Jesus. Every day as I wear His name, I feel the desire to shape up more and more! I love my Savior and I'm doing everything I can to be worthy of His name. Love you all! Until next week...
PS: Funny story for the week. Just imagine you've been fasting for 24 hours and a sweet old lady puts a bowl of buttery popcorn right in front of you in a lesson right before you're going to break your fast and you have to say no. THAT HAPPENED! Ha. Love you all and this awesome work of The Lord that makes us say no to popcorn. :)
